RulesIQ: An AI board game assistant

I’ve been a board gamer since the old Avalon Hill days.

When the Eurogames revolution hit, I turned my kids onto the hobby.

The worst part about gaming is the rules. Advanced Squad Leader has 708 (!!) of them. I’m using Replit to vibe code an assistant that can answer questions. I’m struggling to get the RAG to work, but I haven’t given up.

Heartwood

Captain Planet went off the air in 1996, and since then, there have been a bunch of great kids’ cartoons that have focused on the environment - Octonauts, the Wild Kratts, Jane. Some, like The Magic School Bus Rides Again, did episodes about climate change.

But there hasn’t been a program specific to global warming, a show that offers kids hope. I tried to change that with Heartwood. Now more than ever, I think we need a show like this.

Dogs

I've done a lot of things in the course of my life. Being in a dog food commercial with Ripple, the family's Nova Scotia Duck Toller Retriever, was not one I would have predicted. Watch the video here.

If You Can Keep It

The word “vote” did not appear in the US Constitution until passage of the 15th Amendment in 1870. Even then, it still took this country 95 years to enshrine this right for all citizens, regardless of race, color or creed, through the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

With the Shelby v Holder decision in 2013, the Roberts court has been steadily eroding this progress. The SAFE Act, if enacted, will limit it further.

If You Can Keep It is a play designed to be used as a fundraising vehicle for all the amazing groups fighting to expand our right to vote.

I’m still looking for the perfect playwright. If you have a recommendation, reach out. (This is a funded, commissioned project, compliant with Dramatist Guild guidelines.)

Tool Time

Just after b-school, I bought a house built in 1873. Over the years, I taught myself basic carpentry, electrical and plumbing.

And when our line to the sewer main backed up, I learned how to demo concrete floors. Malodorous work, for sure, but when your weekday mostly consists of keyboards and computer screens, you’d be amazed how incredible it feels to use a jackhammer.
